GRAPHIC BIRDIES
The great tit in early spring, the blackbird high in the trees on a warm summer evening and the wren on a misty winter morning: if there is one type of wildlife that feels especially close to us, it has to be birds. We naturally associate them with different seasons, making them perfect for bringing a particular atmosphere into the home. Do you love a modern, contemporary and minimalist look? Nature’s Favourite Musicians
We could probably all name one when asked: “What’s your favourite little bird?” Of all wildlife, birds are perhaps the closest to our everyday lives. All it takes is opening a window and you are greeted by several cheerful songbirds in the trees. While the great tit is often one of the first birds we hear in early spring, summer is filled with the lively calls of swifts soaring overhead.
And when you walk through the woods, you may suddenly hear the unmistakable tapping of a woodpecker on a tree. Or what about the meadow birds that inhabit open landscapes, such as the Dutch polder? Birds have a nostalgic quality for precisely this reason: we associate them with particular moods, seasons and even memories, from childhood moments in the garden to holidays by the coast.
A more graphic approach for a modern, urban look
With this in mind, I wanted to create a collection that captures this feeling while incorporating the colours of the seasons. The birds are portrayed in a soft, realistic style against completely plain backgrounds, creating a graphic and minimalist aesthetic. This makes the collection just as suitable for modern, colourful city apartments as it is for country homes.
I deliberately chose a contemporary interpretation of bird art, using large-scale formats and playful compositions to move away from the traditional bird paintings and nature prints that are so widely available.
