Traditional horse paintings in a contemporary way
Horse art hardly gets more romantic than this: the classic oil paintings of horses by artists such as George Stubbs and Alfred Munnings. Lush estate gardens, sweeping hills and open landscapes by the woods form the backdrop to this type of art.
As an artist, I naturally also wanted to know what it is like to create romantic landscapes, working "quickly" and without too much detail, as if I were back in 1850, in the age of Impressionism. What I enjoyed most, in fact, was that it teaches you entirely new techniques, quite apart from creating work you would not normally make.
Traditional with a modern twist
Still, I wanted to give it a modern, contemporary spin. For that reason, I do not paint heavy or cloudy landscapes, but light, sunny ones in warm colour palettes, as if you can almost feel the warmth of a June summer's day radiating through the image.
Not particularly fond of landscapes, but you love the classic compositions of the past? That is why I devised the colour-block backgrounds: you keep the traditional form of the horse, but with contemporary old money colour fields for a more modern, urban interpretation. All these horse artworks are characterised by full-body compositions, enriched with a landscape or a plain or colour-block background.
