Caribbean blue oceans, clean beaches and peaceful, healthy animals: since the arrival of modern humans, this beautiful described picture does no longer exist. Beaches full of bottles, waters with millions of bags and an enormous amount of dead animals: it’s all the result of the monster called Plastic. And, with the upcoming years, all of this will be even worse if we don’t do anything to change it. But, we can fix the problem if we start now. Today. And, you can help with that!
Plastic in the ocean
(Source: WWF) It is one of the biggest nature disasters of today: plastic in the ocean, again some human activity that is causing the planet, besides deforestation, a huge amount of trouble. From the Caribbean area to close to home: this mess is everywhere to be seen. Where animals could swim peacefully back in time, nowadays their days of being a living creature are, even right after their birth, counted…
Apart from all fishing nets boats and fisherman left behind, a huge amount of plastic is being dumped each and every minute. In perspective: every hour, an amount of eleven Olympic swimming pools will be dumped in the ocean...
Containers losing nets and rivers draining plastic garbage to the oceans: everything that end up in sea cannot be digested. The products are all, one by one, falling apart with the result of becoming more toxic. Slowly, the ocean is changing itself into a plastic soup.
Countless animals that wash ashore died mainly from the effects of plastic. Hooks, plastic caps and other small things: it’s all in the stomach of all kinds of sea animals and shorebirds.
At least one of three sea turtles has plastic in its stomach: nowadays, this specie got the conservation status of ‘threatened’, all by the result of human activities. And, it becomes even more worse with the minute… But, we can do something about it!
What can you do?
Fixing is a problem is easier said that done, but what can you do? This problem won’t be solved in a year. But, if we work on this together, we can make magnificent results, rather today than tomorrow…
‘My contribution will have so little effect, does it even help?’ Absolutely! All ‘small effects’ together will be a big one! So, your effect will be much more powerful than you might think. So, how can you help?
Plastic free: Tips!
- Do you want to drink something while you’re on your way? Leave plastic bottles and choose for a more sustainable option, like the refillable bottle: same effect, less plastic!
- Replace plastic bags (when you go out for shopping) for standard bags you can use all the time of multiple times
- If it’s not necessary, never use plastic disposable items, such as plastic plates, cutlery, straws and, also accurate, the famous blue covid19 masks
- Do you want to keep something? Skip the plastic bags and go for washable containers and jars
- Soap in plastic bottles? You don’t need them! Nowadays there are many providers of shampoo bars: these bright coloured products are available in several types, matching your skin and hair type, without a plastic shell. It’s not only durable, it's also very modern! And, they even last 2-3 times longer than regular soaps: double effective!
We have to take action now
Above mentioned tips are accessible. But, that is also the key to solve this problem! Many plastic products are coming from our own houses, so it’s very easily to do something about this.
And, to be honest, what do we want more? Those gorgeous, bright, blue oceans full of healthy animals or many dead creatures, dirty beaches and oceans that looks like a third rate garbage dump? And, it’s not only dangerous for animals: what about our own drinking water..?
We cannot let this happen while we can do something about this. Are you going for a plastic ocean yourself? Start rather today than tomorrow with these tips. Together, we can make a difference.
On behalf of the animals and nature: thank you very much!
